American Express is very popular among business owners and corporations due to a well developed program to accommodate their needs. However, American Express charges higher processing fees to the merchants who accept their credit cards, which diminishes its overall popularity. American Express is not as widely accepted as by merchants as Visa or MasterCard, and therefore it is not always as convenient of a credit card for the general public.

American Express is viewed as a company which offers "charge cards" rather than the classic "credit cards."
