It is important to know that credit cards are issued and supported by banks and financial institutions, and not by the major credit card brands, such as VISA and Discover Card. The brand, or type of credit card you uses, is actually a payment network. Organizations like Discover Card make sure that millions of retailers and businesses can process their credit card brand, while the issuing financial institutions manage the money.
Discover Card is a payment network in its own right, anchored by Discover Bank. Discover Card was one of the first credit cards available that offered credit card holders a cash back bonus based on how much they purchased. This proved to be both a unique, and very popular, idea when it hit the market. Discover Card gained a broad customer base in a short amount of time. However, like American Express, the Discover Card has high processing fees for merchants, and consequently is not as widely accepted as Visa and MasterCard.
